WESTON, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale United FC’s USL League Two Men’s team battled to a 2-2 draw against Weston FC on Wednesday evening in a heated road rivalry. Goals from Michael Appiah and captain Mathys Lefebvre helped Fort Lauderdale secure a hard-fought point in a match filled with momentum swings and intensity from start to finish. With the result, Fort Lauderdale has recorded back-to-back draws for the first time this season, improving its record to 7-2-2 (23 PTS) through 11 matches. The action began early, with both sides creating scoring opportunities. Weston struck first in the 18th minute after a handball in the box awarded them a penalty. Fort Lauderdale goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren made a brilliant save on the initial attempt, but the rebound fell directly to a Weston player, who finished into an open net to make it 1-0.
Fort Lauderdale responded 11 minutes later with a well-executed equalizer. Lefebvre played a perfect through-ball down the right wing to Joackim Betina, who drove into the box and delivered a cross. Johan Arevalo’s shot was saved, but the deflection landed at the feet of Appiah, who slotted it home to tie the match at 1-1.
Weston quickly regained the lead in the 34th minute on a near-post finish following a counterattack. But just four minutes later, Fort Lauderdale answered again. Carlos Zambrano earned a penalty after an incredible showing of skill and footwork drew a foul inside the box. Lefebvre stepped up and drilled a powerful shot to the left side of the net, leveling the match once again in the 38th minute.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the second half, but neither was able to break through. After 90 minutes, Fort Lauderdale United FC came away with a point on the road in a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Weston FC.
