FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – On Wednesday afternoon, the USL Super League announced that three Fort Lauderdale United FC players were named to the May Team of the Month. Forward Sh’nia Gordon, defender Sabrina McNeill, and forward Kiara Locklear were recognized for their efforts in helping Fort Lauderdale United clinch a playoff spot while earning eight points over five matches in May (2W, 2D, 1L).

Gordon is making her second Team of the Month appearance this season, though her first as a starter after being listed on the bench in March’s edition. The electric, dynamic West Virginia product has been a crucial piece in the club’s push for a playoff spot, starting matches at both right back and right wing during that time frame. Gordon scored two goals and recorded an assist in May, including the point-sealing goal against Spokane Zephyr FC and an assist on Locklear’s game-winning strike against Dallas Trinity FC. She also completed 98 passes, created two chances and put three shots on target throughout the final month of the regular season. 

The well-rounded, dynamic defender McNeill continued to cement her place in the Fort Lauderdale lineup as the season drew to a close, earning her second Team of the Month nod, and like Gordon, her first as a starter. The Auburn product was a crucial contributor on both ends of the pitch in May, playing all 450 minutes across five matches. She scored the point-saving goal on the road against DC Power FC, created two chances, and completed 187 passes on the offensive end. Defensively, McNeill won 28 duels, 21 tackles, made 22 clearances, and recorded 10 interceptions as she helped lead FTL UTD to a playoff appearance.

Locklear has been dominant for Fort Lauderdale United since arriving just before the winter break and has now earned her first Team of the Month honor in the final month of the season. The Lipscomb alum scored the game-winning goal against Dallas Trinity FC at Beyond Bancard Field, securing a crucial three points that helped the playoff push become successful. Locklear played 412 minutes across the five matches in May, completing 102 passes, putting three shots on target and creating three chances.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale United FC (11-8-9, 42 PTS) drew its matchup with Spokane Zephyr FC (11-8-9, 42 PTS) on Saturday evening, 1-1, in its final regular season match of the inaugural USL Super League season. Forward Sh’nia Gordon scored her fifth goal of the season to secure a point in the crucial, physical draw on an assist from defender Cameron Brooks. With the result, Fort Lauderdale United ended its regular season on a four-match points streak (2W, 2D) and clinched a Super League Playoff spot in the first season in club history. The club will look to carry that momentum into next Sunday’s playoff duel with top-seeded Carolina Ascent FC, a team it has already defeated twice this season. 

Fort Lauderdale United returns to the pitch on Sunday, June 8, for its first-ever playoff matchup, taking on top-seeded Carolina Ascent FC. The season series between the two sides has been evenly split, with each team claiming two wins across four meetings. Their first encounter came on September 6 in Carolina in just the second match in club history for both teams. Jasmine Hamid scored late, but FTL UTD fell 2-1. In the rematch on December 14 at Beyond Bancard Field, Fort Lauderdale bounced back with a 2-1 win, powered by a brace from Kiara Locklear. The third meeting saw FTL go on the road again and come away with a 2-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Hamid and Locklear. In their fourth and final regular season clash, held in Fort Lauderdale, Hamid and Addie McCain both found the net, but Carolina earned 5-2 win to even the series.

Fort Lauderdale came out aggressively from the opening whistle, and their early pressure paid off in the 8th minute. A pinpoint pass from Brooks found Gordon inside the Spokane box. Gordon took a smooth touch, created space with a sharp move and fired a shot that deflected off the back post and into the net, giving FTL UTD a quick and much-needed 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Spokane equalized. Despite the early equalizer, goalkeeper Cosette Morché was dominant as the first half went on, making a trio of key saves in the 13th, 32nd and 36th minutes to help the club maintain the 1-1 scoreline at the break.

Heading into the second half, the stakes were clear: with the result of the Dallas Trinity FC vs. Carolina Ascent match finalized, a draw would be enough to send Fort Lauderdale United into the postseason, while Spokane needed a win to clinch a berth. With Sheyenne Allen carrying a first-half yellow card, Head Coach Tyrone Mears made his first change by bringing on forward Jorian Baucom. Morché continued her standout performance, coming up with two key saves in the 53rd and 66th minutes to preserve the 1-1 scoreline and keep Fort Lauderdale in playoff position.

Mears made three more changes in the second half, bringing on midfielders Darya Rajaee and Anele Komani for Taylor Smith and Tati Fung (68th), as well as Hamid for Julia Grosso (77th). The match remained deadlocked at 1-1 as it reached the 90-minute mark, and with four minutes of stoppage time added, Spokane knew it needed a victory to qualify for the postseason. In the 92nd minute, Morché faced a one-on-one with potential Player of the Year Emina Ekic. Rising to the moment, she charged off her line and delivered a season-defining sliding save in the final chance of the match. After 94 tense minutes, Fort Lauderdale United FC earned a 1-1 draw with Spokane Zephyr FC and clinched their spot in the postseason.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – As the USL Super League wraps up its inaugural campaign, recognition for the league’s top individual contributions comes into focus. The Young Player of the Year Award honors the most outstanding player under the age of 23, and out of 42 eligible players across the league, three Fort Lauderdale United FC standouts have emerged as strong contenders.

Taylor Smith – Midfielder – 17 Years Old

Midfielder Taylor Smith has not only been a key contributor for Fort Lauderdale United FC – she’s also made history. Earlier this season, Smith became the first player in USL Super League history to move from an academy contract to a professional deal, making her the youngest player to sign a pro contract in league history. On the field, Smith leads all U-23 players in matches played (26) and minutes played (1,851), while ranking third in passes completed (406) and seventh in chances created (9). She has started 21 of Fort Lauderdale United’s 27 matches and has been a steady presence in the midfield for a club just one result away from clinching a postseason berth.

Kiara Locklear – Forward – 22 Years Old

Forward Kiara Locklear joined Fort Lauderdale United just before the midway point of the season, and quickly became a vital part of the club’s attacking unit. Through 15 appearances and 13 starts, Locklear has emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous young attackers. The Lipscomb standout leads all U-23 players in goals (5) and assists (4), while ranking T-2nd in chances created (14) and 4th in minutes played (1,156). Despite joining midseason, Locklear ranks third on the team in combined goals and assists (9), trailing only Addie McCain (12) and Jasmine Hamid (11), with roughly half the number of starts. Her pace, production and presence in the final third have made her an instrumental piece of Fort Lauderdale’s attack. Locklear will be a key figure once again as the club looks to secure a playoff berth Saturday evening against Spokane Zephyr FC.

Laurel Ansbrow – Defender – 22 Years Old

Defender Laurel Ansbrow joined Fort Lauderdale United FC ahead of the second half of the season, and immediately made an impact. The center back became a key part of a back line that battled injuries down the stretch, stepping in with consistency and composure. Ansbrow arrived in South Florida after a full collegiate campaign with Wake Forest, where she started 23 matches and logged over 2,000 minutes, including a National Championship appearance. Since making her professional debut with FTL UTD, she has started all 14 matches and played every minute – a testament to her reliability and fitness. Among players under the age of 23, Ansbrow leads the league in passes completed (560), ranks tied for 2nd in assists (2), and sits 3rd in minutes played (1,260). She’s also earned Team of the Month honors twice (February and March) in just her first three months as a pro. Ansbrow’s consistency and presence on the back line will be critical once again as Fort Lauderdale United looks to secure a playoff berth Saturday evening against Spokane Zephyr FC.

Fort Lauderdale holds the edge in the season series with a win and two draws, but with both teams deadlocked at 41 points – and Dallas Trinity FC just one point behind – the stakes couldn’t be higher for Saturday’s 9:00 p.m. showdown in Spokane.

As that approaches, Fort Lauderdale United FC midfielder Addie McCain has positioned herself well to be considered for one of the most closely watched awards: Player of the Year. The club’s captain and midfield anchor, McCain has been one of the most consistent, impactful and well-rounded players in the league’s inaugural season.

The Texas A&M alum has appeared in all 27 matches up to this point, and has been a central figure in Fort Lauderdale United’s success, contributing on both ends of the field in a campaign defined by durability, leadership and top-tier performances. As the club’s captain, McCain has set the tone for her squad both on and off the pitch. She is the only player in the league to be named to the Team of the Month on four occasions – highlighting her consistent, high-level form across all phases of the season. Offensively, McCain is one of just three players to register a hat trick during the 27-match campaign, underlining her ability to take over a game when it matters most (9/22 vs. Lexington).

Fort Lauderdale was on the attack in the early stages of the match, earning a pair of corner kicks. On the first, Cameron Brooks’ header deflected off of the woodwork, and the rebound fell to Sabrina McNeill. Last match’s hero fired a shot that beat the Dallas keeper, but the ball was saved off the line in the 7th minute. Just one minute later, Tati Fung nearly gave the club an advantage with an Olimpico, but the shot was saved. A new addition to the starting lineup, Sheyenne Allen was making her presence known on the left wing, highlighted by an impressive run in the 13th minute. 

Fort Lauderdale jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute after an amazing run from Gordon down the wing. The forward made it behind the Dallas defense but made the unselfish decision to play the ball to Locklear, who took a touch and sent a rocketing shot past the Dallas keeper to give FTL UTD the advantage. Locklear capped the goal with a stunning backflip celebration, drawing a roar from the crowd and setting the tone for Fort Lauderdale’s relentless pressure.

The Fort Lauderdale attack kept the pressure on after taking the lead, repeatedly playing through-ball passes behind the Dallas defense. Addie McCain nearly doubled the lead in the 32nd minute, but her volley just went over the crossbar. The Fort Lauderdale defense held strong down the stretch, highlighted by a physical play from McNeill, as the club went into the halftime break leading 1-0. 

Julia Grosso, making her second return from injury, impressed at left back with composed and effective play throughout. Goalkeeper Cosette Morché, largely untested in the first half, was called into action in the 53rd minute and came up big with a save to maintain the lead. Substitutions in the 54th and 63rd minutes brought fresh energy, as Delaney Lindahl, Jorian Baucom and Thelma Hermannsdottir entered for Grosso, Gordon, and Allen. Fort Lauderdale continued to add fresh legs, putting Anele Komani and Celia Gaynor into the match for Taylor Smith and Fung in the 83rd minute. Locklear continued to be on the hunt, nearly recording a brace on a left-footed, knuckling shot that was saved by the Dallas keeper in the 87th minute. The defense held firm as Dallas pressed for an equalizer as the final whistle approached, and Morché earned her seventh clean sheet of the season as Fort Lauderdale secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Dallas Trinity FC.

Sabrina McNeill scored her first goal of the season in the thrilling draw, leading the club earning a point on the road. With the draw, Fort Lauderdale United has earned points in back-to-back matches after going six matches winless, and will look to carry its momentum into its final home match of the season against Dallas Trinity FC on Saturday night. With just two matches remaining in the inaugural USL Super League season, Saturday’s duel will be a monumental one as both sides have their eyes on the postseason.  

Fort Lauderdale United will return to the pitch on Saturday night in its final home match of the season on May 24. The two sides have faced off a trio of times this season, with the clubs owning a purely even split thus far with a win, loss and draw a piece. Fort Lauderdale fell in the first meeting in Dallas 0-1 on November 2. FTL UTD bounced back and earned a hard-fought 2-1 home victory courtesy of goals from Hamid and McCain on December 1 at Beyond Bancard Field, and the two clubs tied on April 19 in Texas in the most recent clash.

Fort Lauderdale United was aggressive on the attack early, led by Sh’Nia Gordon down the right side. The chemistry was there for Sabrina McNeill, Felicia Knox and Addie McCain in the beginning stages of the match, putting together a strong run of one touch passes on the left side.

Goalkeeper Cosette Morché made a clutch save on a hard shot in the 15th minute to keep the game tied at 0-0. In the 18th minute, Knox took a shot on a free kick that was saved by the DC keeper, and the rebound fell to Jasmine Hamid – who’s header was saved on the rebound.

Cameron Brooks, McNeill and Hamid were crucial in defeating the DC Power press, using their chemistry to get the ball into FTL’s half of the field. Kiara Locklear and Laurel Ansbrow continued being physical on both ends of the pitch, setting the tone for the match.

Hamid nearly broke through, hitting the outside of the net on a shot in the 34th minute. McCain put a header on target just three minutes later, but it was saved by the DC keeper. Just as halftime approached, DC took the lead after a Morché save rebounded into the box, and FTL UTD went into the break trailing 0-1. 

Midfielder Darya Rajaee opened the second half with an unreal through-ball pass for Hamid in the 51st minute, sparking a bit of creativity for the FTL side. McCain played an amazing pass for Knox in the 57th minute, who’s shot just missed the net in the 57th minute. 

McNeill made a terrific run down the left side from end to end, earning a throw-in down in DC territory. Knox continued to hunt for the net, taking another shot that just missed the net to the right in the 60th minute. The first wave of reinforcements entered the match for FTL UTD in the 64th minute, with Anele Komani and Delaney Lindahl entering the match for Taylor Smith and Knox. 

In the 69th minute, McCain played a perfect chest pass to McNeill. The Canadian took a shot, but it was saved by the DC keeper. Another wave of subs entered the match in the 76th minute, with Sheyenne Allen and Jorian Baucom making their way onto the pitch for Hamid and Locklear. 

On a goal kick in the 83rd minute, Morché sent the ball all the way to just in front of the DC box, where a defender got in front of the ball and attempted to shield it. McNeill – showing tenacity and intensity – made her way around the shielding defender and fired the ball into the back of the net to equalize the match.
