FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Last week, USL League Two announced its honors for the month of May, with two Fort Lauderdale United FC players earning recognition. Midfielder Carlos Zambrano was named USL2 Player of the Month after an incredible five-match run, while goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren earned Team of the Month honors following a standout showing in the net. The duo played key roles in Fort Lauderdale United’s unbeaten run and rise to the top of the USL League Two table in the first month of the season.
Zambrano was a standout for Fort Lauderdale United in May, scoring five goals in five matches. The dynamic midfielder found the back of the net in a variety of ways, from curling free kicks and long-range screamers to clinical finishes inside the box. After each goal, the Florida native brought the crowd to life with his signature backflips and knee-slide celebrations. His five goals ranked third in the league for the month and helped Fort Lauderdale finish May unbeaten (5W, 0L) while climbing to fifth in total goals scored (10).
Van Haveren was sensational between the posts in May, recording a clean sheet in all five of his appearances. He finished the month with five shutouts and eight saves, which ranked eighth in USL League Two, and he was the only goalkeeper in the league to make at least eight saves without conceding a single goal. His steady presence was crucial in Fort Lauderdale United’s perfect defensive record throughout the month.
